In a world first activity, one of the country’s most loved potato chip brands, Heartland Potato Chips, has joined forces with Jono & Ben from The Hits to create a limited edition chip flavour, ambitiously launching it into space.
The new chip flavour, ingeniously named ‘Out of this World’, is a crazy mix of Maple Bacon and Sour Cream & Chives, sprinkled with Salt and Vinegar – and was specially chosen by The Hits co-host Jono Pryor, who also came up with the creative campaign to launch the chips into space.
Pryor says as a kid he always wanted to be an astronaut so that’s where the inspiration for the ambitious space launch idea came from.
“Thanks to the Oasis Orbital Systems team at University of Canterbury, our ‘Out of this World’ chips were officially launched into space on Monday. Lots of stuff has been launched into space, but never potato chips! It’s pretty great to do something that no one in the world has ever done before – launching them about 40 kilometres into the air, to reach the edge of space.”
Using a high altitude weather balloon filled with helium, the chips were launched into the stratosphere on Monday morning – the same day that the limited edition flavour was launched into retailers across the country.
When asked about the flavour, Pryor says: “They’re delicious – it sounds like a wild combination of flavours, which you wouldn’t expect to work at all, but the palate says otherwise.”
The Hits Breakfast co-host Ben Boyce says: “We’re very excited about our new collaboration with a great Kiwi company – Heartland Potato Chips. The flavour is guaranteed to take your tastebuds on an emotional solar-coaster journey.”
Heartland Potato Chips Commercial Manager, Kyle Miller says: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Jono & Ben on this new product. Potato chips are already fun, but the boys have managed to take the fun aspect of our product to the next level! We’re seeing a huge amount of support from our retailers who have jumped right in to back the product with displays in nearly every supermarket in New Zealand.”
Following the space launch, The Hits are encouraging listeners to take a photo of their ‘Out of this World’ chips to be in the draw to win $10,000.
